I loved him.
I lied for him.
I laid with him, my flesh and bone surrounding him, holding him, hiding him from the world. In my arms he would remain hidden away for hours, safe from the darkness that only I knew had been destroying me.
I was selfish, so selfish...but I couldn't let him see it, no, I couldn't let him see through me.
My words were sharp, my tongue of barbed wire, but I only wanted to shelter him, to hide him from the hideous world that I understood far too well.
He was so perfectly naive, a sparrow singing happily in his cage, singing and sighing so lovily for me, the one who kept him from all harm...and I let him believe that I was just another sparrow, longing for his warmth, his love.
Did my actions make me hideous? Perhaps.
Did I love him a little too much? Maybe.
But I loved him, and he was mine, and we were perfect.
